PTSD and CBD

PTSD and CBD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects large numbers of veterans as well as citizens that have NOT served in the military.  It is a serious condition that should never be ignored. Treatments for this condition include therapy and anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medications.  Unfortunately, these options do not work for everyone. In an effort to find a better solution, there has been a lot of research into cannabidiol (CBD) as a possible treatment for PTSD. Let’s take a look at the evidence to find out how CBD could help you cope with and recover from PTSD.

Medical Marijuana and PTSD

PTSD is one of the conditions approved for the use of medical marijuana in many states. In a review published in 2015 in The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders, author S. Yarnell reviewed forty-six studies and concluded that medical marijuana may reduce the symptoms of PTSD, although more large-scale studies are needed. Medical marijuana contains a number of compounds, including CBD, so it is important to conduct further research to find out how the various compounds individually affect PTSD symptoms.

CBD and PTSD: The Evidence

A study published in Drug Testing and Analysis Journal in 2012 showed that cannabis resin was able to reduce symptoms of PTSD in a patient with a severe form of the condition. The study concluded that some compounds in cannabis could dampen the emotional impact of traumatic memories and therefore reduce the impact of flashbacks. According to a separate study funded by the University of Birmingham, CBD specifically both acutely inhibited fear expression and enhanced extinction to produce longer lasting reductions in fear. Although further testing should be conducted, the results so far are promising.

How CBD May Help With PTSD?

A study published in Psychoneuroendocrinology Journal looked at the effects that cannabinoids have on the behavioral and physiological response to stressful events. This study found that activating the cannabinoid system in the brain could help to prevent stress-induced behavioral symptoms, which are common in PTSD. The study authors concluded that this system could be crucial to controlling the response to emotional trauma.

Could CBD Help You?

CBD could be an effective treatment for PTSD in some people. If you suffer from PTSD and want to know whether CBD could help you, talk to your doctor and figure out if it could help.
